In Loving remembrance of.... Captain Byron J. Hook LL.B, 93 of Stockport, passed away peacefully, Thursday, June 16, 2016 at the Apple Tree Assisted Living in Beverly, Ohio. He was born February 25, 1923 in Stockport Ohio, the second of three children of Bryant Sr. and Anna Laura [White] Hook. Bryant Sr. was killed in a terrible accident when Byron was a young child. Anna later married Clarence Bishop, who helped raise Byron, and his siblings, Kathryn Helen, and Bryant Jr. Hook from that time forward. Byron grew up in Stockport, his lineage can be traced to Hooksburg a small town named after his Great Grandfather, and River Boat Captain of Civil War fame. I. N. Hook. Subsequent to his graduation from Windsor High School in 1939, Byron continued his education at Marietta College where he joined the ROTC prior to graduating in 1944 with a degree in chemistry. Shortly after graduation, Byron began attending the University of Pittsburg and worked at the Mellon Institute. However, his attempt to obtain a Doctoral Degree in Chemistry was cut short in 1946 when he was called to duty for his first of two active duty tours. During a brief leave of absence, Byron returned home to marry his first mate and lifelong partner of 69 years, Beatrice Juanita Scott. An act that to this day stands as a testament to his impeccable taste, great judgment, and good fortune. Together they formed an unbeatable team, known for their community and social activism, for their gracious and gregarious hosting of many lavish parties, their considerable and willing support of their families, and for raising two sons, Michael John, and Larry Douglas Hook. Byron served in both WWII and the Korean War. His duties included the command of multiple Mine Sweepers, and later, after 32 years of service, he retired from the United States Navy Reserves with the highly commendable rank of Captain. Upon his completion of active duty, Byron's prior chemistry research led him to Houston Texas and a position with the National Lead Co. Then seeking greater opportunity, he attended, and graduated from South Texas Law College, and took a position as a Lawyer with the Baroid Research Division of the National Lead Co. While working on a joint project with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Byron was noticed, and at age 36 accepted a position with Goodyear Corporate in Akron Ohio as a Trade Mark Council. He worked many long hours, dedicating himself to the task. In his capacity he traveled the world, litigating at the highest levels, and ultimately became section head for their legal department with over 55 lawyers on his staff. During his final 15 years with Goodyear, he had global responsibilities for their trademark, deceptive advertising and copyright interests. After many years of hard work Byron retired, and he and Juanita returned to their Stockport roots, where on the Scott family's storied property they build a beautiful home full of love and happiness. Captain Hook served in an advisory position to the Board of Trustees of Marietta College. He was a member of the Beverly Methodist Church, past member of the American Legion, and Navy League. He was a sustaining member of the Texas and Ohio Bar Association, as well as countless other civic and community groups over his life time. He is survived by his wife Beatrice Juanita [Scott] Hook, son and daughter in laws Larry Douglas Hook, Diane [Sorrels] Hook, and Francis [Ledbetter] Hook. In addition to his parents, and stepfather, Byron was preceded in death by his first son Michael John Hook, his older sister Kathryn Helen [Hook] Johnson, and his younger brother Bryant Jr. Hook who also served in the Navy.
