Darrell Eugene “Sonny” Carpenter passed away on Tues. April 21, 2026. He was born Aug. 31, 1933, in Lathrop. He married Mary Louise Wallace in February 1956. He worked for Finley’s Meat Packing then joined the Operating Engineers until he retired in 1995. He loved all sports and always played baseball and softball, but his biggest love was rabbit hunting with his 97 Winchester. Then, in later years as his eyesight and reflexes started to fail, he used his Double Barrel Fox, a Christmas gift from his kids. He always worked hard and never asked anyone for anything, that’s all that can be asked of any man. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years; sisters Sevilla and Doris; and brother Robert Lee Roberts. He leaves behind his children, Ron Raines, Katina (Steve) Lescody, Allen (Brenda) Carpenter, and Darrin (Misty) Carpenter; sister Ruth Ann Tatman, grandchildren, Heather, Nikki, Nathan, Maelana, Mia, Hope, Garrett (Kelsey), Blake, Gracie, Tyler, Taylor, Quentin and Adam; 18 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. Funeral service will be Sat. April 25, 2026, at 10:00 A.M. at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home in Chesterhill. Friends may call on the family Fri. April 24, 2026, from 4-7 P.M. at the funeral home.
