Francis C. Downing, 92, of the Riverside Country Care Center in McConnelsville, formerly of Stockport, passed away at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at the nursing home.

He was born October 15, 1918 in Bristol Township, Morgan County, the son of the late Harley and Elizabeth Butler Downing.

He was a construction worker and self-employed as owner of the Downing Garage in Pennsville. He was a member of the Corinthian Lodge 111 F&AM of McConnelsville, and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He is survived by one daughter, Carolyn (Ralph) Spencer of Waterford; one son, Gary (Michelle) Downing of Pennsville; three grandchildren, Lori Schilling of Beverly, Brian Spencer of Waterford, and Renee Bole of Pennsville; two step-grandchildren, Kristen Hallowell of McConnelsville and Chelsea Williams of Pennsville; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 and a half years, Iona Hope Taylor Downing, who died July 17, 2011; one son, Keith Downing; and a sister, Marilyn Utley.

At his request, no calling hours or services will be held. A caring cremation will take place. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Fairview Cemetery.
