Gayle Smith Zanesville, Ohio: Gayle "Smitty" Smith, 90, of South Zanesville, passed away at 4:34 pm Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Genesis Morrison House surrounded by his family. He was born February 23, 1921 in Morgan County, Marion Township, Ohio, the son of the late William Curtis and Jessie Lavada Hill Smith. He was formerly employed by National Battery, National Plumbing and retired from Cooper Industries (McGraw Edison) in 1989. He was a US Army veteran of W.W. II serving in the States for six months and for three years in France, England, and Belgium with the Military Police. He was recipient of two Bronze Stars. He was a graduate of Ames-Bern High School. He is survived by daughters Sandra (Ron) Noland of Newark, Ohio, Jackie (Lawrence) Goins of Cutler, Ohio, and Rhonda (Dave) Carter of Zanesville, Ohio, brothers Robert Smith of Amesville, Ohio, and Randy Smith of Little Hocking, Ohio, sisters Vivian Thompson of Canton, Ohio, Donna Hale of Columbus, Ohio, Wanda Tate of Canal Winchester, Ohio, and Karen Norman of McConnelsville, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 8 great great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his G.I. war bride, Ethyle Smith who passed away February 19, 2009, brothers, Roger, Argyle, and Paul Smith, and sister Louise Ramsey. Friends may call from 4-8 pm Wednesday at DeLong-Baker & Lanning Funeral Home and 12:00 Noon to 2:00 pm at the stone- Matheney Funeral Home in Chesterhill, Ohio, where services will begin at 2:00 pm with Pastor Steve Hale officiating. Interment will be Mt. Herman Cemetery. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
