Obituary

Harvey Samuel Davis, 77, of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Haslet, Michigan passed away Thursday, Februray 27, 2014. Dr. Davis was a mathematics professor for his entire career at Michigan State University. He was born July 6,1936 in Columbus, Ohio. Growing up Lombard, Illinois, he graduated from Glenbard Township High School and went on to receive a B.S. from Eastern Illinois University, an M.S. from the University of Miami, Florida, and a PhD in mathmematics from the University of Illinois. He will be deeply missed by his family: his wife of 50 years Marinel Thompson Davis, sons Soren (Tamara) Davis and Mitchell (Marcellr) Davis of Chicago; daughter Sarah (Joseph) Cope of Avon, New York; granddaughter, Sibyl Cope; sisters, Ann (Dennis) Arnson of Riverdale, Georgia and Evelyn (Larry) Erven of Lombard, Illinois; three nieces and a nephew; and two great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold A. and Gladys Glenn Davis. Dr. Davis had a wide variety of interests in addition to mathematics, including reading of all kinds, science, astronomy, photography, bridge, chess, cooking, nutrition and a lifelong passion for music. He played many musical instruments, mostly self-taught. He was a member of the University of Illinois marching band and played in many other bands throughout his life. In retirement, he enjoyed playing the tuba with various community bands, including The Key Biscayne Chowder Chompers and the Venice Florida Concert Band, as well as attending the Blue Lake Adult Instrumental Camps in Twin Lake, Michigan. His family and friends fondly remember his ability to speak intelligently on almost any topic. A memorial service in his honor will be held on July 6, 2014 at McKendree Cemetery in McConnelsville, Ohio.
