James H. Hopkins, 92, of McConnelsville passed away on Thursday afternoon, July 12, 2012 at Highland Oaks Health Center in McConnelsville.

He was born on June 12, 1920 in Morgan County, a son of the late Otis A. and Carrie Sealock Hopkins.

He was a graduate of Manchester High School and Bliss Business College. He was a World War II veteran having served as a Flight Sergeant with the U.S. Army Air-Corp 401st Bomb Squadron. He retired from the State Highway Department where he was County Superintendent and District 10 area Superintendent. He was also a General Contractor.

Mr. Hopkins was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 24 of McConnelsville. He was active in the Republican Party at the local level and the state level for many years. He was named Republican of the Year in 1987.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Ruth Simcox Hopkins, whom he married on February 21, 1947. He is also survived by his children: two daughters, Janet (Larry) Cordray of McConnelsville and ,Jo Lynn (Andrew) Blair of Dayton, OH; three sons, James (Rhonda) Hopkins of Coshocton, OH, Dean (Cathy )Hopkins of Claysville, OH, and Jerry (Beth) Hopkins of Washington, PA; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline Alice Apperson of Senecaville, OH.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Guy Wayne Hopkins, Donald D. Hopkins, Paul Alden Hopkins, and Layton Douglas Hopkins.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at the Miller-Huck Funeral Home in McConnelsville.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the McKendree United Methodist Church near McConnelsville, with Pastor Bracken Foster officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in McKendree Cemetery.
