James L. Tate, 76, of Canal Winchester, died on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013 at 10:14 P.M. at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born on Feb. 28, 1937 in Cutler, Ohio to the late Leo J. and Fearl B. Harris Tate. He was a carpenter out of Union Local #200 in Columbus, attended the Faith Assembly of God Church in Canal Winchester and enjoyed sports and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Smith Tate of the home, 1 son, James B. Tate of Canal Winchester, 1 daughter, Shelley R. Lyles of Canal Winchester, 2 brothers, Paul Tate of Canal Winchester and Don Tate of Columbus, 4 sisters, Virginia Norris of Cutler, Cathy Davis of Canal Winchester, Judy Smith of Belpre and Rita Tate of Groveport, 2 grandchildren, Erica and Jessica Lyles and a great granddaughter, Mariah Lyles. He is preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Dwight and 2 sisters, Esther and Frani. Services will be held on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at the Bethel Wesleyan Church near Bartlett with pastor Ray Richards officiating. Burial will follow in the Friends Southland Quaker Cemetery near Cutler. Friends may call on the family on Sunday, from 2-6 P.M. at the Stone-Matheney Funeral Home in Chesterhill.
