Obituary

Jerrold Ivan Calendine, 85, of 1600 Main Street, Stockport, Ohio, passed from this life at 10:26 A.M., May 22, 2010, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. Born April 11, 1925, to Wayne Cecil Calendine and Bertha Marie Porter Calendine, Jerry was raised in Windsor Township with his two brothers Billy Arthur and Ronald Eldon, and his "Katzenjammer-Sister" Beulah Juanita (Sis) Calendine Jenkins! He often told of their "assigned seats" in the car, the family milk route, the old chicken coop and how they never argued as they grew up. Jerry's love for mechanics and collecting license plates began at a very early age. As youngsters, he and Ronald made roads with toy trucks and tractors along the banks of their township road. Later, young Jerry collected scrap metal and parts to repair wagons and bicycles. He restored a chicken brooder shed with cardboard and scrap wood and opened his "repair" shop as a pre-teen. He was often in trouble for riding his brother Bill's bike, so he saved up his money and bought a brand new Schwinn with a horn, speedometer, front and rear lights, luggage rack, and streamers. Upgrading to automobiles (long before the legal age), he and his sister would joy ride in the family car. The milk route was a family business which involved driving and meeting people - Jerry's favorite things. With his sister riding "shot-gun" one day, Jerry asked Beulah if anything was coming. She said "nothing...." he pulled out....."but a big truck" she finished! A 1943 graduate of Windsor High School, Jerry enlisted July, 1943, in the U.S. Navy and served his country as a Petty Officer, 2nd Class in the South Pacific. He was discharged January 4, 1946, and remained a true patriot and a proud Veteran throughout his life. On April 6, 1947, Jerry married Neva Belle Eddleblute, and they made their life-long home in Stockport. Two girls completed this family, Linda Diane and Nancy Coraleen. Jerry always felt a bit "out-numbered" as even the family dog was female! Owner and operator of Calendine's Garage from 1948-1972, Jerry held several other jobs in the community. He was Town Marshall for the Village of Stockport, bus driver for Windsor School and mail carrier. One of his favorite hobbies was dealing and restoring Model A and Model T Fords with the added thrill of driving them in local parades. Jerry was proud to be one of the charter members of the Stockport Volunteer Fire Department. He was an active fire-fighter and participated energetically in the Fireman's Follies and Fireman's Festivals. Some of his more well-known roles were in the "Womanless Wedding", "The Chicken", and especially "It's in the Book." He fit the parts well as he was continually cutting-up and teasing. "Cousin Weak Eyes" is how he was known to his CB radio friends. KLN2103 lit up the airways with humor and songs as he mase his way to and from work! Jer accepted a Master Mechanic position at Central Ohio Coal Company March27, 1957. Working swing shift wasn't always popular with Neva and the girls, but he happily threw his lunch pail in the car, hooked up the windshield wipers with binder twine, and drove his old klunker to the mines! He retired July 29, 1990, after working the last few years in the store room there. Grandchildren had graced his life by that time, and he enjoyed countless hours watching Jason play basketball, Carrissa compete in gymnastics, Jeremy march in the band, Jenna run track, and teaching Josh the mechanic trade. Thinking his five grandchildren were the best.....he THEN became Great-grandad (Papap) to seven. Jason and Skye Seiler-Hann of California have two beautiful blonds, Bella and Sadie. Carrissa Hann of Malta is the mama of Ellora, a third grader at East Elementary and Cai, his private-duty nurse. Jeremy and Barbara Davis of Terre Haute, Indiana delivered his first great grandchild, Parker Jay. Cale Riley and Rylan Hope are the adorable, youngest great grandchildren, and are parented by Josh and Jessica Davis of Williams, Indiana. Jerry took his belief in God very seriously! A Member of the 7th Street Church of Christ in McConnelsville, Ohio, he occasionally lead the song service and always offered smiles and hugs to all around! He was truly a gentle man. Services will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. at the Seventh Street Church of Christ in McConnelsville with Evangelist Sam Bartrug officiating, burial will follow at the Stockport Cemetery. Friends may call on the family on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, from 5-8 P.M. at the Matheney Funeral Home in McConnelsville.
