Obituary

Julie Anna Hurlow, 65 of Malta, passed peacefully from this earth to her heavenly home on Thursday May 9, 2024.  She was born to Stanley Wayne Barkhurst and Phyllis Barnhart Gheen on October 8, 1958.  Julie married Walter Wallace and three children were born of this union: Amber Garrett of McConnelsville, Lura (Ben) Brannon of Philo, and Silas Wallace of McConnelsville. Despite separation, the two maintained a friendly relationship as they raised their children and grandchildren:  Romeo Wallace, Aidyn Gable, Peyton Welsh, and Kale and Brant Morrow.  Julie married Jeff Hurlow on December 31, 2003 adding two more sons to her family, Jesse (Tracy) Hurlow of Dresen and Chase Hurlow of Columbus. She was also blessed with two more grandchildren, Alex and Rachel Hurlow.  Julie is survived by her loving parents Phyllis and David Gheen of Malta. David raised Julie as his own and she adored him. A much loved brother Thomas Barkhurst (Donna Castaneda) of Imperial California, her children, grandchildren, nephews Cameron and Keon Barkhurst, great niece and nephew Abigail and Logan Barkhurst all of Imperial California, a brother and sister in law, Dan and Suzanne Hurlow of Woodbridge, Virginia, and her most beloved husband Jeff.  She also leaves behind many close friends, a musical community, and her fur babies.  Julie was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Perl and Rose Barnhart, paternal grandparents Stanley and Sarah Barkhurst, father Wayne Barkhurst, and Dewey "Buddy" Thomas.  Julie lived her life in a way that made her hard to forget. She radiated the light of her lord in everything she did. Her unmistakable laugh was contagious and had a way of making everyone around her feel accepted and loved. One of her favorite things to do for fun was to go to Kroger to see who she could run into to chat with. She also looked forward to the Morgan County fair each year because it gave her the opportunity to talk to old friends and make new ones. She honestly never knew a stranger. Julie believed in a church without walls and took every opportunity she could get to testify and share God's love with anyone she had the pleasure of talking with.  By the grace of God, Julie celebrated 34 years of sobriety on August 28th of last year.   She enjoyed sharing her experience, strength and hope with others so that they may also comprehend the word serenity and know the peace that a life free from addiction promises.   Many will remember the joy Julie exuded while singing and playing music, whether in her home, at church, or on stage. She loved to sing country and gospel music whenever she had the chance.  Not only was she known for her voice but for her ability to connect with her audience.  She was part of many groups who she sang with in Florida and Ohio, but regardless of where she was singing or who she was singing with….you can guarantee she was barefoot and smiling! Upon diagnosis of terminal cancer in October, God immediately took her fear and allowed her to happily live out her days with her family while praising his name. She clung to the verse: Psalm 34: 3-4 "O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the LORD, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears." Julie was a woman of undeniable faith in God and loved her Jesus! Until her very last breath she was thanking God and asking everyone around her to do the same.  She cried tears of joy, knowing that she was so close to meeting her Father and forever resting in His loving arms.  Matheney Funeral Home was entrusted with her care.  A celebration of her life will be held later this year.  In the meantime, please join her family in praising God for his many blessings.
