Raymond D. (Ray) Campbell, 78, of McConnelsville, died unexpectedly on May 4th, 2010. Ray was born on September 10th, 1931 in Deerfield Township to the late Mabel (Stewart) and Earl Campbell.

Ray was co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Great Lakes Bankers Bank in Gahanna and also past president of the bank. He began his banking career in 1952 with Huntington Bank in Columbus prior to becoming involved in Community Banking in 1956. He worked with First National Bank, McConnelsville from 1956-1961, was an organizing officer and Executive Vice-President of Citizens Bank of Logan from 1961-1965 and President of Oberlin Savings Bank from 1966-1981. He co-founded the Independent State Bank of Ohio (ISBO) in 1981, serving as President and CEO until his semi-retirement in 1999. ISBO later changed its name to Great Lakes Bankers Bank.

He was very active in banking related organizations including being co-founder of the Community Bankers Association of Ohio and serving as Past President and Director. He taught commercial lending at Ohio University Ohio School of Banking, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland for two terms, former Chairman of the 4th Federal Reserve District Audit Committee, testified before Congress many times regarding banking legislation, past president and lifetime director of Independent Community Bankers Association of America (Washington, D.C.), Past Chairman of the Bankers Bank Council (Washington) and also served as an expert witness of "Banking Structure" throughout the United States which included addressing the Harvard School of Business in 1979 and 1980. Ray was proud of his one-on-one relationship with President Jimmy Carter and with four Federal Reserve Board Chairmen: Burns, Miller, Volcker and Greenspan.

Ray graduated from M & M High School in 1949, attended Ohio University and trained with the Army ROTC, later graduating from the Ohio School of Banking. He was a Charter member and past President of the M & M Jaycees, former secretary and trustee of the M & M Fire Department, member of the M & M Rotary and chair of the Rotary Junior Golf Program, member of Morgan County Farm Bureau, trustee and Board Chairman of Grace United Methodist Church, trustee and Vice-President of the Morgan County Historical Society, first Chairman and board member of the Morgan County Learning Center, board member of the McConnelsville Opera House, board member of the Kate Love Simpson Morgan County Library and a life member of the Morgan County Coon Hunters Association. He was well known in the community and across the United States for his service to the places in which he lived and the banking industry to which he was dedicated.

He is survived by his wife, Edwina Ervin Campbell, whom he married June 12, 1987, four sons; Donald, Mike and Jeff of Daytona Beach and David of Columbus; a daughter Beth Campbell of New Jersey and step-children Sara LeMaster, Amy Kerschner and Nick Jenkins; several grandchildren/step-grandchildren; a brother, Bob, of Mount Vernon and three sisters.

No calling hours will be observed. Interment will be in Deerfield Cemetery following a caring cremation. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 8th, one p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor Bracken Foster officiating. The family will be receiving visitors starting at noon that day at the church. Miller-Huck Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
