Vernon E. Sheets, age 93, of Zanesville, Ohio, passed away at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12 at Highland Oaks Nursing Center in McConnelsville. He was born in Chesterhill, Ohio on August 30, 1918, a son of the late William F. and Ethel Rowland Sheets. He was a machine operator at Taylor Woodcraft in Malta, Ohio, and attended the Calvary Baptist Church in McConnelsville. He was a WW11 Veteran . He served in Europe and was in three major battles: the Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He served in the 99 th Division and was in the 2nd division at the time of discharge. Vernon is survived by his wife Alice Huffman Sheets of the home, 3 sons: Richard(Linda)Sheets, of Malta, Kevin(Annette)Sheets of Malta, Stanley(Diann)Sheets of Stockport; 1 stepson: Eugene(Kathy)Huffman of Gallipolis, 17 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 1 great, great grandson, 2 step grandchildren, 2 daughters: Patricia(Garry)McIntire, and Beverly(Steve)Miskovich, of Zanesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers; Dean and Wayne, 1 sister, Bessie Phillips, and 1 son, Roger Sheets. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Matheney Funeral Home in McConnelsville with Pastor Galen Finley officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be in the Malta Ceemetery.
