Obituary

Wanda "Virgene" Ray, 99, of Hopewell formerly of Malta, passed away 9:00 a.m., January 4, 2015, surrounded by all her children. Virgene was born February 19, 1915 at home in Morgan County, Ohio, to the late W.A. and Jennie B. Fitch Waymer. June 13, 1935 she was united in marriage to the late Charlie Myron Ray in Greenup, Kentucky. Virgene was a 1933 graduate from Ringgold High School. She was a 57 year member of the Malta United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women's group. She loved to quilt and made several beautiful quilts over the years, one which placed 1st at the Morgan County Fair and 1989 Best of Show at Burr Oak Lodge craft/quilt show. She is survived by her children; Martha McElfresh of Zanesville, Sheila (Ron) Acord of Buckeye Lake, Mary Morrison of Malta, Richard (Carol) Ray of Columbus and Jean Anne (Ron) McFerren of Hopewell. Also surviving are her sisters, Ellen Ruth Wilson of Reynoldsburg and Vera (Gerald) Beal of Glouster. She has 13 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 20 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Virgene's past employment included; Osborne's Restaurant, Ben Franklin Store, Burr Oak Lodge, Lucy's Truck Stop, Malta Manufacturing and Price & Richardson Pharmacy. Along with her husband, Charlie, who passed away September 1989, and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Thelma Burkheimer, sons-in-law, George McElfresh, G. Eugene "Tink" Lyons, Gerald Ray Morrison, and great grandsons, Brandon Vanoster and Zackary McElfresh. Calling hours are scheduled for Wednesday, January 7, 2015 from 2 - 6 p.m. at Miller Huck Funeral Home, McConnelsville. Services will be conducted by Pastor Mike Wells and Pastor Maryann Tomlinson at the funeral home on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 11 a.m. Final resting place will be at Malta Cemetery. Memorial contributions, in Virgene's honor, may be sent to Malta United Methodist Church, Malta Bible Church or Genesis Hospice and Pallative Care 713 Forest Ave. Zanesville, OH 43701
