McConnelsville Wayland "Way" E. Carrel of Zanesville formerly of McConnelsville died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 1:25p.m. at the Adams Lane Care Center after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born October 10, 1930 to the late Peter G. and Helen Clark Carrel in Noble County near Dungannon but grew up in Center Township. He retired from Prewett Construction, and was self employed most notably for Baskets By Way, and cleaning uniforms at Gould. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of the VFW Post # 4713 in Malta, the American Legion Post #24 in McConnelsville, and the United Mine Workers of America. He is survived by his wife Julia M. Carpenter Carrel whom he married Aug. 1, 1955, two sons, Steven (Lynn Barnes) Carrel and Bradley Carrel both of Zanesville, one daughter, Marci Carrel of Cairo Egypt, one brother Larry (Brenda) Carrel of McConnelsville, one sister, Lue Ann (James) Smith of McConnelsville, five grandchildren, Lacey, Abbey, Sarah, Alexandra, and Sabrina Carrel, and one great grandson, Lukas Romans-Carrel. He was preceded in death by his parents. Wayland chose cremation and requested no calling hour. A short memorial service with military honors will take place Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 at 11:00a.m. at the Malta Union Cemetery with Pastor Galen Finley Officiating, following with Wayland's ashes being scattered by his family at Carrel Cemetery. The family has requested no flowers and donations in Way's name to Genesis Palliative Care and Hospice, M&M Fire Dept., or Muskingum Behavioral Health.
