Obituary

Wilma Sue Smith, age 88, of 8200 Sportsman Club Rd., Johnstown, Oh., formerly of Malta passed away on Wednesday, December 21,2011 at home due to natural causes. She had lived in Johnstown with her daughter, Joy, for the past three years. Generation Hospice of Licking County had been involved in Mrs. Smith's excellent care for the last month. She was born September 29,1923, in Rochester, Tx., near Abeline, Tx., to the late Narvia and Roshia Jane (Powell) Turpin. Her parents and older descendants were born and reared in the Blue Ridge Mountains in N/E Georgia near Hiawasse, Ga.

Sue graduated from Rochester High School in 1941. She went on to beauty school in Lubbock, Tx. and became a licensed beautician. She worked in beauty shops in Lubbock, Tx. and later in Marietta, Oh. After raising a family she worked at Morgan High School as a cook for many years, and retired. Sue was a long time member of the MCKendree UM Church in McConnelsville, Oh. and recently a member of Miller Memorial UM Church in Johnstown, Oh. Sue had been active as the ladies' Sunday school teacher for many years and enjoyed participating in the ladies' UMW group and attending Bible study. She enjoyed many types of music, reading, working crossword puzzles, feeding and watching the birds, taking a drive, and going to flea markets and music events.

Sue married Herman Ray Smith on November 2,1946 at Gilman Ave. Methodist Parsonage in Marietta, Oh. They met in Lubbock, Tx. while Herman was stationed for his remaining months of service after returning from WW II. They were married for 49 years at the time Herman passed away in 1996.

Sue is survived by three children: Darrell Smith of Laurel, De., Stanley Smith (Linda) of Columbus, Oh., and Joy Glenn (George) of Johnstown, Oh. She has five grandchildren: Lorie Parks, Darren Smith, Angela Tremayne, Jason Glenn, and Haley Smith. There are seven great grandchildren: Brandi Parks, Ashley Parks, Hailey Smith, Gavin Smith, Paxton Tremayne, Avery Glenn, and Josie Glenn.

In addition to her parents she was preceeded in death by her husband, Herman Smith, on October 30, 1996, two brothers Horace and James Turpin, an infant sister, Nora Mae Turpin, and daughter-in-law, Barbara Smith.

Calling hours will be at Miller-Huck Funeral Home in McConnelsville, Oh. on Tuesday, December 27,2011 from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM with the funeral servcie following at 1:30 PMThe burial will be in McConnelsville Cemetery.
