Winnie I. Norris, 94, of Cutler, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the Belpre Landing Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born on Dec. 19, 1922 in Cutler to the late Ernest "Rube" and Minnie Harris Croston. Winnie graduated from Bartlett High School in 1941. After graduation she worked in Washington D.C. for the government for a short time then worked in New York. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Wave at Quantico, Virginia where she was honorably discharged on Feb. 1946. She graduated from the Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland in 1951 where she was awarded the MAX HOCHSCHILD PRISE for meritorious nursing. After graduating nursing school she married her husband of 66 years, Kermit Norris and moved to Canton. In Canton she worked as a public health nurse where she took care of migrant workers. She fought to eradicate TB among the workers and she fought for improved medical services and improved educational opportunities for the migrant workers. She is survived by her Husband of the home, 1 brother, Alton Croston of Little Hocking and 2 sisters, Sylvia Mayle of Athens and Alice Croston of Cutler. She is preceded in death by her parents and 4 brothers, Irvin, Rufus, Donald and Gilbert Croston. Services will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Stone-Matheney Funeral Home in Chesterhill with burial following in the Rockland Cemetery in Belpre. Friends may call on the family on Weds, July 12, 2017 from 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home.
